Independent review of NHS pathology sevices -response from industry

    January 27th 2006

    Summary of Response

As the suppliers of in vitro diagnostics to the National Health Service we would like to focus our comments on two areas: 1. The evidence base used to demonstrate the value of in vitro diagnostic tests. 2. The methods used to procure and pay for in vitro diagnostics. We further believe that a whole systems approach should be encouraged so that in vitro diagnostics are fully integrated into the patient pathway. This includes the use of Point of Care Testing where it can be demonstrated to be of clinical benefit to the patient in addition to being a cost effective use of resource. BIVDA believes that these issues are central to achieving significant improvements in pathology services which will be essential elements to enable this crucial part of healthcare to continue to provide innovative new technologies.
