The NHS Constition, the first of its kind in the world, was signed by the Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Health secretary Alan Johnson and the NHS Chief Executive David Nicholson. The Costitution, published on 21st January 2009 brings together in one place for the first time in the history of the NHS what staff, patients and the public can expect from the NHS.
The Constitution explains that by working together we can make the very best of finite resources to improve our health and wellbeing, to keep mentally and physically well, to get better when we are ill, and when we cannot recover to stay as well as we can to the end of our lives.
