IFCC- EDMA Award
|
The European Diagnostic Manufacturers Association (EDMA) and the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine now invite submissions for the joint IFCC-EDMA Award established in 1998. The objective is to generate papers focusing on the effective applications of laboratory testing and providing evidence for the clinical and economic benefits for any of the following laboratory test(s):
Tests for detection of Diabetes Mellitus (Glucose, HbA1c)
Prostate Specific Antigen
Tests for detection of Cystic Fibrosis
Hepatitis C Virus detection
Toxoplasmosis screening
The author of the winning paper will receive a prize of 7,500 euros and will be invited to the 16th IFCC-FESCC European Congress of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory medicine (EuroMedLab 2005) in Glasgow on 8-12 May 2005 to present their paper during a symposium and will receive the award at a special ceremony. www.glasgow2005.org/programme.html
There is an additional prize for a British winner or best runner-up provided by BIVDA of an extra 2,500 euros.
Background: Screening programs are available for these tests in some European countries, but not all. The prevalence of some of these diseases may vary from country to country and may justify the different decisions made in the availability of certain tests, but this is not always true. In some countries, the question “Why not us?” is legitimate. In this case, EDMA will encourage making such tests more available by demonstrating the effectiveness of laboratory testing, through collecting and evaluating high quality scientific data. This will contribute to the promotion of testing these 5 diseases by proving economical and clinical value.
EDMA’s objective is in line with the recent Council Recommendation 878 of 2 December 2003 inviting the European Commission to report on the implementation of cancer screening programmes and to encourage more co-operation between Member States in research and exchange of best practice as regards cancer screening.
Papers that have been published or have been accepted for publication between January 1, 2003 and January 31, 2005 are eligible for the Award.
Six reprints or hard copies or one electronic (Word) copy of competing papers should be sent to IFCC-EDMA Award Secretariat, Closing date for submissions: January 31, 2005
