BIVDA welcomes support for life sciences technology in the Budget

The British In Vitro Diagnostics Association (BIVDA) welcomes the support for both technology and SME’s in the budget.

With a large group of SME companies in its membership, and a significant export base, BIVDA is pleased to see the practical help set out today, particularly the additional investment in both the Technology Strategy Board and in UK Trade & Investment.
As an industry sector where new tests and technologies developed by individual companies are immediately licensed widely to competitors, the news that tax incentives on intellectual property and patents are under consideration will be a considerable boost to UK-based companies.

BIVDA’s Director General, Doris-Ann Williams, said ”The UK has held a strong position in the development of IVD’s historically and there are numerous clusters of innovation in this sector in the country. Any support that can help maintain our sector and foster these start-up companies through the difficult economic climate would be incredibly welcome.”

This support from Government includes the newly created Office of Life Sciences. The IVD sector is pleased to be represented as a participant alongside pharma, biotech and other medical technologies. BIVDA and its members look forward to continuing to contribute to the OLS in developing the strategy for the support for life sciences which will emerge during the summer.
